Starting out in any creative field can be a challenging experience, but the beauty of the journey is that it's never the same for anyone.
My friend shared this Ira Glass quote with me over a coffee, as we reflected on our own experiences starting out in photography.
It's a reminder that every creative journey is unique and worth embracing...
The Gap by Ira Glass:
"Nobody tells this to people who are beginners, I wish someone told me....
All of us who do creative work, we get into it because we have good taste.
But there is this gap.
For the first couple years you make stuff, it’s just not that good.
It’s trying to be good, it has potential, but it’s not.
But your taste, the thing that got you into the game, is still killer. And your taste is why your work disappoints you.
A lot of people never get past this phase, they quit.
Most people I know who do interesting, creative work went through years of this. We know our work doesn’t have this special thing that we want it to have.
We all go through this.
And if you are just starting out or you are still in this phase, you gotta know its normal and the most important thing you can do is do a lot of work.
Put yourself on a deadline so that every week you will finish one story. It is only by going through a volume of work that you will close that gap, and your work will be as good as your ambitions.
And I took longer to figure out how to do this than anyone I’ve ever met. It’s gonna take awhile. It’s normal to take a while.
You’ve just gotta fight your way through".
A bit about me.
In January 2021, I started my business, Tropical Romance & Co. And I'm proud to say that in just 6 months, I was already booked out.
I shot 33 weddings in 2021 and 40 in 2022, and it's been an amazing experience to be a part of so many special moments.
I truly believe that photography has the power to capture memories that will last a lifetime, and I feel so grateful to be able to do what I love every day.
People often describe me as a warm and friendly person with a unique personality. Think a mix of early 2000's sitcoms, Patagonia puffer jackets, sunshine, and warmth. I'm like a scout leader who's always there for my loved ones, and a rock that they can always count on.
I love hearing about people's passions and dreams, and I especially love being around people who like to grow and challenge themselves.
I find that these kinds of interactions are some of the most inspiring and motivating moments of my day. I'm always up for talking about wild ideas and having meaningful conversations with those around me.
